And you must stand beÂfore it, and sayâ
âI know, I know;
InÂside the wind does blow,
InÂside the waÂters flow;
This makes the Hair Tree growâ
I know, I know.â
Then the doors will fly open, and you can pass in. WithÂin grows the Hair Tree. What else you will find there I shall not say. Now, I have kept my part of the agreeÂment; see that you keep yours when you reÂturn.â
So sayÂing, the bird flapped his wings once and disÂapÂpeared.
Rupert looked about, and findÂing himÂself very near land, rowed to shore, and stepped from his boat. It seemed to be a pretty sort of counÂtry, and at first he did not noÂtice anyÂthing unÂusuÂal. He walked straight on till he came to a row of splenÂdid sunÂflowers, and stopped in front of them to adÂmire them, when all at once a pair of beauÂtiÂful white hands and arms were thrust out from the nearest stalk, and graspÂing him by the shoulders began to pull him, with a strength he could not resÂist. At once all the othÂer stalks had put out their hands, and were reachÂing toÂwards him. And from above the large yelÂlow flowers there apÂpeared headsâwoÂmenâs headsâwith beauÂtiÂful dreamy faces and bright golden hair. In anÂothÂer moÂment Rupert felt the arms would have crushed him to death, for they were fast tightÂenÂing their hold, and felt like iron hands.
SudÂdenly he reÂmembered the jewÂels in his pockÂets, and drawÂing out a brilÂliant emÂerÂald, flashed it beÂfore the face of the sunÂflower in whose arms he was. âLeave me alone,â he cried, âand you shall have this.â
But still the arms bound him with their strong grasp, and gave no sign of loosenÂing their hold. Then Rupert took the jewÂel and, holdÂing it above his head, said, âIf you donât let me go at once, I will throw it beyÂond your reach, so that you will nevÂer get it.â
For a moÂment the arms wavered, then they slowly gave way, and Rupert burst from them tremÂbling at the danger from which he had esÂcaped. With haste, and still keepÂing at armsâ length, he dropped the jewÂel inÂto the cruel beauÂtiÂful white hand that was stretched out to reÂceive it. Then he ran as fast as he could from the row of sunÂflowers and sat down, still pantÂing and tremÂbling, on a large bare stone.
After he had a little reÂcovered himÂself, he looked about him, and perÂceived that not only the sunÂflowers but all the trees had hands and arms, which they were alÂways stretchÂing to try and catch someÂthing, and on lookÂing on the ground he saw that even the blades of grass were armed with tiny hands, which they kept stretchÂing inÂto the air.
For amuseÂment he burÂied his hand in the grass, and in an inÂstant it was clutched by a hunÂdred tiny hands, that pulled it hard. He could easÂily draw it away, for it was no more than if a numÂber of spiders had seized his hand.
